Developer Days 2005 Philippines version

Developer Day 2005

DevDays is Microsoft Philippines’ largest annual event targeted at developers. It showcases Microsoft’s current and latest technologies and this year will include topics on Visual Studio Team System, Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005.

Pre-release technologies which have not been previously shown in public in the Philippines will also be presented to give attendees a glimpse into the future of software development. At the same time, there will be a focus on how developers can leverage current products and technologies to build enterprise-ready solutions.

The event is designed to give the local developer community exposure to real-world solutions, to provide opportunities for peer interaction, and to leverage local and international speakers to share their expertise. This year, DevDays will feature a three-track format. With 4 sessions per track, attendees will be able to choose from 16 sessions to attend.

Microsoft, Yahoo to Link IM Networks

Microsoft and Yahoo are set to announce on Wednesday a blockbuster interoperability deal that will reshape the landscape of the fragmented instant messaging market. The companies will connect their IM networks so users on each can communicate with one another using text and voice chat free of charge.

The agreement marks the first time major players in the highly-competitive IM industry have officially partnered up to enable cross-network communication. Interoperability has always been a hot topic among instant messaging providers, but had never yielded a compromise.

Is this a bug? Windows create folder

At first I couldn't believe this, but when i tried it. It sure can't create one.

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a folder or file anywhere named as "con" or "CON". This is something pretty cool and unbelievable At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened . Try it out yourself

Sun Java Champions

Looks like Microsoft MVP right? anyways..good luck my java friends here..who wants to pursue being a Java Champion.. =)

Sun recognizes that there are leaders in the Java Developer Community. The Java Champions program is an effort to bolster and encourage this community of "leaders".

When excited individuals form into committed groups that develop new and interesting ways to use the Java Platform, then a community of passionate "Champions" is born. While it's possible to compete against individual products, it's tough to compete against entire communities.

The concept behind Java Champions is to build an informal but select grouping of Java technology leaders from different segments of the Java community:

· Professional developers/architects/consultants

· Academics/University Professors

· Authors of Java-related content

· Java User Group (JUG) Leaders

Sun wants to engage and recognize the various parts within the Java community. The above communities are in a lot of ways **connected to each other**. Sun wants to give these leaders the opportunity to provide feedback, ideas, and direction to grow the Java Platform. This interchange may be in the form of technical discussions and/or community activities with Sun's product, and developer outreach teams.

Sun shares a common goal with the Java developer community:

"We want the entire developer community to adopt the Java platform."

Coding4Fun is the point, right?

I bet if you took a poll, a lot of coders were gamers before they were coders—and that they got started by coding games. The cool thing is, after you learn to code and start making stuff work in the real world—stuff that isn't games—it's still fun! People reading this at Coding4Fun obviously think so, right?

So we all learned how to code and we know coding is fun, what do we do with that? Well, I think we want to give other people a chance to try coding, see what it's like, and figure out whether it's as fun for them as it is for us. If it is, they'll be coders too, and glad they are.

So how do we help them try coding? And when? We think kids can learn coding as early as they can learn reading and typing and math, and that learning coding helps with and complements other learning—so the sooner the better. Kids are all about fun, too: Harry Potter, Nintendo, Legos... So if you want kids to learn to code, make it easy. Make it fun. Help them make it a game.

Microsoft Pushes Kid's Programming Language

Microsoft has signed on to promote a new programming language intended to replace BASIC as the first step students take towards learning how to code.

The Kid's Programming Language, or KPL, was developed under the direction of Jonah Stagner, and his colleagues, ex-Microsoft program manager Jon Schwartz and former NCR engineer Walt Morrison. The three run the software consultancy Morrison-Schwartz Inc.

"One of the things we realized is that we all learned programming on some flavor of BASIC when we started. You're not going to learn how to program in BASIC anymore," said Morrison, in an interview. "We wanted something that isn't 20 years old; modern technology that uses an integrated development environment, so we can take our kids and move them directly from this to the .NET environment." [Morrison was speaking figuratively; officially, BASIC was originally devised in the early 1960s at Dartmouth.]

While KPL can be downloaded for free off of a dedicated Web site, it's poised to get wider exposure thanks to a recent descriptive article posted on the Coding4FunWeb site, which is part of Microsoft's MSDN developer network.

Indeed, KPL's affinity for .NET, and the fact that it runs only on Windows, may be the big reason Microsoft is supporting the new language. "Microsoft's major interest is, they want to bring another generation of talented programmers to the world," said Morrison. "And they want them using their platforms. It makes sense to us, too. We believe in the .NET environment. We've been using it for the last four years and that's where we want our kids to go."

As the next step in the promulgation of the language, Morrison said KPL will be sent out in October via CD-ROM inserted into 70,000 Australian computer magazines.

The original catalyst for the development of language, Morrison said, was Stagner's desire to give his 10-year-old son and kids like him a worthwhile language with which to get started. "The idea for us was, let's get them going. Let's give them lots of examples of how games are written that are sound and audio and visually interesting to them, so they'll stay interested," Morrison said. "We think learning is best when learning is fun, that’s our most important reason for the game and sound approach in KPL."

Along with English, versions of KPL are available in German, Swedish, Polish, and Romanian. Additional versions, as well as new features, will be forthcoming. "KPL will have lots of new and interesting things happening very shortly," Morrison said. "We're diverting a lot of our development talent onto it. We've made a decision that this language will definitely be a first step towards Microsoft technology."

C# 3.0 Language Specs

In relation to the Save C# Petition post, here comes the official language specification of C# 3.0 (Orcas).

Is this to be excited on or to be feared. Imagine the language specs for C# 2.0 was released last March 2005 and now this September they already have C# 3.0. How fast they did in the new changes? When will C# 4.0 come out? hehehe..Whew..need to keep up the pace.
