Choosing a laptop, how do you do it?

So, right now I am looking for a new laptop. I would love to have a Centrino, but here is my dilemma:
Toshiba 1.5GHz Centrino --> 2000$ CAN
Compaq 3000+ 64 bit DVD-RW --> 1899$ CAN

Ok, the Compaq is a bit larger, but MAN, thats's crazy! Note that I can also get a Compaq 2800+ 64 for 1699$ (R3230).

Is it just me, or is this a hard choice to make, and like I went to FutureShop and the weight doesn't to be so different. Also, the Toshiba A70 seems to be good, but out of stock!?

I want to know your experiences, how did you chose your laptop, and how did it turn out to be.

The last one I bought myself I was looking for a desktop replacement so I was looking for a 15 inch screen, DVD, CD-RW, lots of CPU and lots of memory. Plus I wanted built in wi-fi and wired networking. Then I looked at HP, Gateway and Dell. I bought a Dell. Of course I was willing to pay for it because I was using money I had made from some writing projects and hoped to use it to do more writing. IN any case, first think about the features that are important to you. My Toshiba tablet has been great for me but other Toshibias have been mixed. I've had great luck with Dells and HP laptops.
